I tried Athletic Greens for a month to decide if it’s worth the hype and the price tag

Trying to get all the nutrients we need into a day is a pretty tough feat. Especially when we’re not home all day, or we simply don’t have the time to curate all of our meals to check every box (Vitamin A? Check. Magnesium? Check.). Sometimes packing a bunch of them into a green smoothie in the morning is my attempt and usually it’s pretty jammed with goodies: kale, berries, pineapple, spirulina or chlorella. But, hearing about Athletic Greens on one of my favorite health and wellness podcasts (shoutout to Genius Life) had me curious. Was this greens powder all that it’s cracked up to be? For a whopping $79/month, I’d hope so!

What’s in Athletic Greens, AG1? It would honestly be better to list what’s not in it because this powder is filled with A LOT of nutritional goodness. But, to name a few: Vitamins A, C, E B1, B2, B6, B7, B12, Niacin, Folate, Calcium, Phosphate, Magnesium, and Zinc. The package states that “AG1 is a comprehensive and convenient daily nutrition supplement with 75 vitamins, minerals, and whole food-sourced ingredients, made for just about everybody.” The serving size is one scoop per day, added to 8-12 ounces of cold water, and it’s recommended to be drunk before breakfast.

You can buy it by the pouch, which has 30 servings (so, one per day) or purchase two at a time. The starter pack also provides you with a bottle and I had an extra promo code that threw in a few travel packs and extra Vitamin B12. They have a subscription where you can receive it monthly, with the option to skip months whenever you want.

Let’s get down to it. Was it worth the hype and worth the price? First, let me start by saying that if you’re someone who can afford this then there doesn’t seem to be a downside to integrating it into your daily morning routine. Of course, I’m not a nutritionist or doctor, so don’t take my word for this being right for just anyone. It’s an easy way to slip in all of these amazing vitamins and minerals into your diet. If you’re on the go, not a cook, and are seeking to improve your nutrition, then this is a great way to do that.

If the price is glaring at you and it’s not in your budget (psst… you might want to check out our Free Budgeting 101 Guide here), then there are a lot of other ways to incorporate some of these into your diet. I haven’t come across a comparable greens powder that comprises all of these nutrients (and definitely not one that tastes as good and refreshing!), but I’ll definitely be on the lookout and wouldn’t be surprised if competitors do start to pop up.*

I’m always looking for ways to better my diet and if you do, too, then stay tuned for more from us on this topic!

Additional note from Elisabeth DiDonato, MS, RDN (and Revive’s new team member!):A comparable greens powder is Primal Greens from Primal Harvest. This one has incredible ingredients that help support your immune system, energy production/storage, focus and cognitive function, healthy hair and nails, and more.”
